Have you ever wished you could escape the city heat and drink a Mai Tai on the beach somewhere instead? Well here at Annex, we can’t bring you the beach, but we can bring you the beverage. It’s no secret that tiki cocktails are having a moment, but do you know their origins? Our beverage experts sure do, and they can’t wait to share it with you! So “rum, don’t walk” to our Origins of Tiki class!
In this class, guests will:
discover the history of tiki cocktails and learn about where each famous drink comes from
taste 3 different rums on their own, and then in a basic tiki cocktail

About the Instructor: Sam Kling is a Brooklyn-based Wine & Spirits professional with a decade of experience in the beverage industry, after previously working as a photographer and darkroom technician. He’s an avid home cocktail enthusiast, as well as a collector of ceramic tiki mugs, exotica records, ephemera, rum and other rare spirits. He credits his fascination for the genre to his great-grandparents mid-century basement tiki bar. Sam is the General Manager and buyer for Greene Grape Wine & Spirits.

About the Instructor: Michele Thomas is Assistant General Manager of Greene Grape Wine & Spirits, a writer, & Certified Sommelier with deep roots in the world of food, wine, & education. As Executive Editor of the International Culinary Center (formerly The French Culinary Institute), she edited recipes & developed curriculum materials for the school’s cooking and wine courses in New York and California, as well as L’Ecole, the school’s Michelin Bib Gourmand-rated restaurant. Michele is the co-author of Culinary Careers for Dummies (Wiley), with Chef Annette Tomei & Tracey Vasil Biscontini, & the author of Sodium & Oxygen (Rosen) two middle grade science books for children. Her writing about food, wine, & culture has appeared in The New Yorker, Edible Brooklyn, Activist Philanthropist, BestofNJ.com, and Garnish, the mobile bartending academy for wine & spirits professionals in Africa. We’ll start the day off with Recoup Beverage ginger juices from 11-2, followed by Simply Soupreme’s soup-to-go from 2-5, and finish off with dessert from Malai Ice Cream from 5-8pm!
On Monday evening, we’ll be hosting Hot Spoon’s chutneys and spreads from 5-8pm, each a unique flavor that will taste great glazing or alongside your holiday main course, drizzled on cheeses, and so much more!
We’re kicking off our weekend demos early this week, with Sound Sparkling Tea on Friday from 4-7pm! Come taste each of their flavors and stock up for the warm weekend!
On Saturday, we welcome Harlem based Egunsi Foods, fresh, filling soups made with traditional West-African recipes, between 11-2pm. Afterwards from 4-7pm, Hella Cocktail Co will be here doling out tastes of their Margarita and Moscow Mule mixes!
Provisions catering team will make a special appearance from 5-7pm at Wine & Spirits. Come by 765 Fulton St. for a special wine pairing. We’ll be serving the Chateau Rouet’s Cotes de Provence Rosé with our Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Skewers and House Made Tzatziki Sauce.
Sunday we get a little spicy with Forward Roots, a pair of locally made fermented chili pastes, traditional and vegan, used for making your own kimchi, or adding a spicy twang to your soups, grain bowls, in marinades and more! Meet the maker from 11-2, and learn her favorite recipes and uses for these unique flavors.
Join us this weekend for some tasty tastings! On Saturday, 3/23 from 11-2, we’ll be hosting the makers from NYrture Natto, our city’s own probiotic, hand made fermented soybean artisans. Afterwards, from 2-5, Goody’s Granola will be here, doling out nibbles of their Brooklyn made granola.
If you plan on shopping on Sunday, come check out one of our newest brands to hit the freezer case, Sweet Nova, from 11-2. This “superfood nice cream” comes in 3 raw, vegan flavors that’s perfect for cool breakfast or a delightful dessert. From 2-5, we welcome back Hot Spoon Preserves, a range of yummy jams made right here in Brooklyn.
Monday evening shoppers get tastes too! Fabalish will be here, offering bites of their baked falafel, with a dab of their vegan faba-based Tzatziki and Spicy sauce, between 5-8pm!
This week, we’ll be hosting 3 local brands that are fairly new to our shelves! Egunsi Foods, based in Harlem, will be sampling out their fully flavored, classic West African refrigerated soups on Saturday from 11am-2pm! Scraps Pizza, another NYC maker, will be here on Sunday from 11am-2pm, with bites of their two frozen pizzas that use the deliciously edible, but “ugly” produce and veggie scraps in their Bell Pepper or Broccoli Pesto pies. On Monday from 5-8pm, we invite you to meet the makers and taste Bed-Stuy’s Chilo’s Original Salsa Picante, a hot sauce that’s tangy and warm, and goes great on everything from perking up soups, to pizza, to tacos!
