As connoisseurs walk by the French section of our store, each and every one gives a reverential nod to one bottle – the Clos de la Roilette Beaujolais. Sometimes they touch the label, sometimes they just let loose a passing comment like ‘that wine is awesome.’ So when we found out that we had a shot at the last 10 cases of the 2011 vintage available to retailers and not reserved for restaurants, we took it. If only to preserve our street cred with our wine reps.
From a producer and vintage that that made famed wine critic Jancis Robinson crow: “I’m in love . . . go, go and invest heavily in 2011 Beaujolais”, this is truly a beloved bottle. Juicy, yet elegant with brambly red and black fruits and an unbelievably silky mouthfeel with notes of smoke and spice. And, in a nice bit of kismet, the label happens to feature a picture of a racehorse that has been on the bottle since the ’60s, perfect if you’re celebrating Derby Day and want an alternative to juleps.
Started with a small life savings and a fistful of credit cards, the Ransom distillery in Oregon is barely 13 years old. The name refers to the amount of money founder Tad Seestedt needed to become self-employed. Ransom’s Old Tom Gin was developed in collaboration with spirits historian and Brooklyn resident David Wondrich as an attempt to recreate a slightly sweeter, richer style of gin that was popular before prohibition. Produced in small batches by combining a malted barley spirit with corn spirits infused with botanicals, its distinctive color comes from a period of barrel aging. Intense juniper meets candied citrus, earthy cardamom, spicy coriander, and a bourbonish caramel – truly a one of a kind spirit!
Tonight from 6-8pm in the Brooklyn wine store, we’ll be sampling Old Tom Gin in cocktails featuring Bitter Truth bitters.
Every February, Kings County Distilling releases a limited edition Chocolate Whiskey. However: after this week’s NY Times article spotlighting this Brooklyn distillery, they’ve run out. Thankfully, we got a case in last week in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, but don’t expect it to last that long! Made using their signature moonshine corn whiskey and chocolate husks from Mast Brothers, it has a chocolatey flavor but no sweetness.
We don’t expect our stock to last long. To reserve your bottle, call the wine store at (718) 797-9463.
