On Wednesday, Eric Asimov rhapsodized of the red wines of Bierzo, a region in the northwest of Spain, that “if you get the opportunity to taste a good bottle, with its haunting, exotic wildflower, licorice and fruit flavors, you can’t help but remember it.” In the Brooklyn store we’re very proud of our Bierzo, Pago de Valdoneje 2007, made from the lesser-well known mencia grape that is typical of the region. And we’ll be pouring tastes of it the whole day at the wine store just up the street from Provisions.

The Garcias, a three-generation wine family, originally made the Pago de Valdoneje strictly for the consumption of friends and locals. They still only make around 2500 cases of this wine made from vines ranging from 50 to 100 years old in age (the phylloxera outbreak devastated the Bierzo region so there aren’t many vines older than this there). We found aromas and flavors of spearmint, vanilla, dark cherries and spice. What will you find?
